   the existential blues

    January 16, 2000

"Unusually graphic and explicit sex..."

the WIZARD,fkap gives up! All those critics are obviously right. Sex is just too readily available. Just look at what we found. And it's coming right into our homes. It would take strict and vigilant parental supervision to keep this "trash" away from our children.

the WIZARD,fkap didn't write one single word below (and we didn't take this picture either). We did edit out some more explicit language. But where did we get all this?

  • "From lace to leather to naughty computer games..."
  • "Experience sexual pleasure beyond your wildest dreams!"
  • "Here, in detail, is the true story of a torrid affair - and a woman's sexual surrender."
  • "Heighten your sexual pleasure through foreplay, message, exciting new positions and more."
  • "DELICIOUS SEX Yum!  ...sexy bedroom talk, fantasy, costumes and erotic turn-ons"
  • "...put more sizzle in your sex life.   ....over 300 color photos"
  • "photo filled guide... takes you to truly erotic heights"
  • "...bondage equipment and insatiable appetite for sexual danger."
  • "...wild sexual acts that others only fantasize about."
  • "...sizzling seductions that include... lusty wife and 20 year old son."
We've got to admit that this is just a fraction of what we found. We could give you a dozen more pictures and pages and pages of more "wild" language.

Where did we get all this? the WIZARD,fkap usually supplies link to the materials referenced in these essays. Well, in this case we can't. You see all this material and photos were found in a Doubleday Book of the Month Club Brochure, January, 2000.

Doubleday Book of the Month!  Long one of the most respected publishers in the world, being chosen by Doubleday for inclusion in the Book of the Month catalog was a badge of honor for authors. Now Doubleday gives it's members an 8 page supplement called "Erotica" featuring highly sexual (and many would say pornographic) material. The title of this essay, "Unusually graphic and explicit sex..." appears dozens of times throughout the brochure.

Are we overly concerned about keeping explicit material from coming into our homes over the Internet, while, perhaps the world's most "mainstream" publisher is bringing in similar material right through the front door.

To once again quote Dan Rosenbaum, at one time editor of the magazine NetGuide, "Nothing happens online that doesn't happen in the real world." Keep the bottle in front of you....
