More Guns... Less Crime

In 1997, John R. Lott, Jr. published the results of a major research project in the "Journal of Legal Studies." His conclusions: that concealed-carry weapons permits reduced the crime rate. The NRA, 2nd Amendment Groupies and Gun Zealots have all proclaimed this for years, but with little evidence and even less credibility.

However, when this information came from a respected economist and were contained in a detailed and thoroughly documented study.... well, that was simply unacceptable to the gun control advocates!! And so shoot the messenger, defile the study and vilify the opposition became the order of the day.

This book updates Lott's original research, adds interesting anecdotal evidence, then reviews the political and academic response to the 1997 first publishing. In fact Lott's More Guns, Less Crime, even details the responses to the responses. While the focus of the book is on the original study, the book is also a sociological review of how political groups with an agenda to deliver, trample down any research that flies in the face of their preconceived notions.

This is the largest and most comprehensive study of the effects of gun control to date. And the study is well-detailed in the book. And it was and is still the target of massive retaliation. The book outlines attacks ranging from amateurish, to misleading, to smear campaigns designed to discredit him. Lott takes the time to refute each argument.

Lott has become a zealot in his own defense. He even outlines his telephone calls to his attackers who, he asserts, eventually hung up on him without substantiating any of their claims.

Lott's conclusions that are backed by evidence. Concealed-weapons permits reduce crime, and do so at a lower cost to society than increasing the number of police or prisons. But if you want all guns to disappear, if you believe that guns kill people, and people are all just innocent victims of the NRA, please don't bother to read this book. It has facts, and you would just have to distort, cover-up or lie about them. And we all know gun control is not a topic for a reasonable, informed debate.

OTHER OPINIONS

"If you believe that it's dangerous to let ordinary people carry concealed handguns, you owe it to yourself to read More Guns, Less Crime. Law and economics professor John R. Lott Jr. presents reams of evidence that violent crime decreases in places where laws are passed permitting concealed weapons. His explanation is that even criminals respond logically to benefits and costs: They don't like to attack people who just might be packing heat."

"Among his conclusions: Women and blacks, who tend to favor gun control most, actually enjoy the biggest safety gains when right-to-carry laws are passed."
